A sweepstakes has been organized to help
former AeroShell Aerobatic Team Lead Alan Henley and his family pay for
medical bills and daily living expenses. Henley became paralyzed last year
after a fall while playing with his children at his home in Birmingham,
Alabama. Tickets are being sold for a chance to win a pedal plane modeled
after his AeroShell T-6 Texan.
Henley spent more than three months at the
University of Alabama Hospital's trauma unit. Since then, he has battled
infections and complications that resulted from the injury, and undergone
extensive rehabilitation. Insurance has covered much of the cost of his
treatment, but the family has learned that the benefits may cut off. Alan
still needs medical care and rehabilitation, and his family needs to cover
the cost of daily living expenses.
The Flamingo Kids, a camping group of
flying enthusiasts who attend EAA AirVenture Oshkosh every year, have
organized the sweepstakes to help. Tickets will be sold every day during
AirVenture 2009 in the Honda Pavilion. Prices are $5 per ticket, or five
for $20. The winner will receive a pedal plane modeled on Alan's AeroShell
T-6 Texan, beautifully handcrafted by Les Koberg. The plans, some
materials, and hardware kit were donated by Gary Sampson of Aviation
Products Inc, and the original kit was enhanced to include LED landing,
navigation, and anti-collision lights, cushioned pilot seat, seat belt, an
authentic AeroShell Team paint scheme, solid aluminum propeller and
spinner, vinyl graphics, and engine details.
